SPSS (originally, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) has been around for quite awhile now. But its impact on the social sciences has been great (as other software packages such as SAS). In graduate school, we began with a program designed for Biomedical users. In those days, one had to type commands and statements on Hollerith cards, using a card punch. Take the cards to a window in the computer center, watch someone bring your tape with data on it, install it on a tape drive, and run the program on the data.SPSS was a major step forward, and subsequent versions have become more powerful. Also, more complex. So is is absolutely predictable that SPSS would become the subject for the ". . .for Dummies" series. And this volume does a decent job helping the reader get through SPSS. . . .

I should have read the other reviews more closely. I like the book. It's been helpful. Amazon delivered it on-time, and it looked like it should have looked, except . . . No CD. I read the other reviews and others have said the CD wasn't there. OK, I thought that was fine. Trouble is the first time I tried to do one of the exercises in the book, I realized I would have to enter 150 data items. Kind of a hassle. We need the CD or at least a website to download the data from. Here is a time when buying the book from a real bookstore would have helped me avoid this situation.

This book allowed me to teach myself SPSS software with no previous experience. However a major drawback is that the visuals (tables, pictures, etc) are pretty much useless in the Kindle version. The tables are too small to see within the text and if you open them up, they are too blurry to actually read. So you essentially have no visual aids in the kindle version.

I bought this book because I needed to use SPSS and had no experience with the program. I read Chapter 1 and Chapter 4 to start and this gave me a good basis. Then I read other chapters as questions came up. If you are used to using computers and learning how to do new things on the computer, then this book is perfect for you. Do not get this book if you are looking for a book to tell you when to run which statistics. This book tells you HOW, not WHEN or WHY. I supplemented the book with SPSS Help menu and internet sights for more complex actions like regression. Overall, I would recommend this book!

This is an excellent how-to guide that sidesteps all of the technical mumbo jumbo. This is an excellent reference book for people, especially students, who need to know how to use SPSS for practical purposes (thesis or dissertation research, preliminary data mining for small businesses) without being computer whizzes.

About the Author
John W. Hill received his Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas. As an organic chemist, he has published more than 50 papers, most of which have an educational bent. He has authored or coauthored several introductory level chemistry textbooks, all of which have had multiple editions published. He has also presented over 60 papers at national conferences, many relating to science education. He has received several awards for outstanding teaching and has long been active in the American Chemical Society, both locally and nationally. Now professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls, Hill authored the first edition of Chemistry for Changing Times in 1972. Revising and updating this book has been a major focus of his life for four decades.

Terry W. McCreary received his B.S from St. Francis University, his M.S. from University of Georgia, and his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. He has taught chemistry at Murray State University since 1988, and was presented with the Regents Excellence in Teaching Award in 2008. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Kentucky Academy of Science, and has served as Technical Editor for the Journal of Pyrotechnics. In his spare time he designs, builds, and flies rockets with the Tripoli Rocketry Association; he was elected president of the association in 2010. McCreary is the author of several laboratory manuals; General Chemistry with John Hill, Ralph Petrucci, and Scott Perry; and Experimental Composite Propellant, a fundamental treatise on the preparation and properties of solid rocket propellant.
